Veterinary Acupuncture at Kowhai Vet

At Kowhai Vet, we are committed to providing the highest standard of care for your beloved pets. As part of this commitment, we’re proud to offer veterinary acupuncture as a safe, gentle, and effective treatment option to support your pet’s health and well-being.

What is Veterinary Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the release of natural pain relieving chemicals and improve overall health. At Kowhai Vet, we take a Western medical approach to acupuncture, combining traditional techniques with modern veterinary science. This ensures your pet receives care tailored to their individual needs, backed by evidence-based practices.

Our Fear-Free Approach

We understand that visiting the vet can sometimes be stressful for pets. That’s why we’ve designed our acupuncture sessions to be as calming and positive as possible. From our fear-free handling techniques to creating a comfortable, quiet environment, we prioritize reducing anxiety and making each session a relaxing experience for your furry friend.

Conditions acupuncture Can Help With

Acupuncture can be used as a complementary therapy for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain: Such as arthritis or degenerative joint disease
  • Mobility issues: Helping pets move more comfortably by relieving muscle "knots"/"trigger points"
  • Stress and anxiety: Promoting relaxation and emotional well-being
  • Neurological disorders: Supporting nerve function and reducing symptoms
  • Gastrointestinal problems: Alleviating symptoms of chronic digestive issues

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Session

Each session is tailored to your pet’s specific needs. Our veterinarian, Tara Buxton, works with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. Sessions are designed to be stress-free, with gentle handling and plenty of positive reinforcement to ensure your pet feels safe and relaxed.

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine, and most pets tolerate them very well. Many even find the process soothing, often becoming relaxed or sleepy during their session.

Treatment is often once weekly for four weeks, though some patients may require further treatments.

Why Choose Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a versatile, natural therapy that works alongside other treatments your pet may already be receiving. Whether used for pain management, improving mobility, or addressing chronic conditions, acupuncture can enhance your pet’s overall quality of life.
